ACC Pan African Research College PhD and Postdoctoral Scholarship in South Africa, 2018



The African Centre for Cities (ACC) is offering Pan African Research College PhD and Postdoctoral scholarship in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment. International students are eligible to apply for this fellowship.
The mission of the ACC is to “facilitate critical urban research and policy discourses for the promotion of vibrant, democratic and sustainable urban development in the global South”.
The African Centre for Cities (ACC) is an interdisciplinary research and teaching programme focused on quality scholarship regarding the dynamics of unsustainable urbanization processes in Africa, with an eye on identifying systemic responses.

Scholarship Description:

  • Applications Deadline: August 6, 2018
  • Course Level: Scholarships are available to pursue PhD and Postdoctoral programme.
  • Study Subject:  Scholarships are awarded in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment.
  • Scholarship Award: ACC Pan African Research College PhD scholarship: Funding and supervisory support will be provided to the successful candidate over a period of 3 years, depending on satisfactory progress. The bursary amount is R200, 000 per year.
  • ACC Pan African Research College Postdoctoral Research Fellowship: The value of the Fellowship is R300, 000 per year, and is renewable for a total of up to two and a half years (30 months), depending on satisfactory progress. The fellowship does not include relocation costs or fringe benefits. The incumbent will be provided with a desk and appropriate access rights to use the research facilities of the University of Cape Town.
  • Nationality: International students are eligible to apply for this fellowship.
  • Number of Scholarships: Up to 8 PhD fellowships and 5 Post-Doctoral fellows based at the 5 partner universities that constitute the Pan African Research College on Sustainable Cities are available.
  • Scholarship can be taken in South Africa

Entrance Requirements: Applicants must meet the following criteria:
ACC Pan African Research College PhD scholarship
  • A Master’s degree in Geography, Urban Studies, Anthropology, Sociology or other related disciplines
  • Excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office software
  • Good qualitative and quantitative research skills.
  • Evidence of academic writing ability.
  • An awareness of actors, challenges and opportunities related to urban sustainability approaches
  • Interest in interdisciplinarity and broad engagement with diverse sectors to co-produce knowledge
  • Familiarity with the use of social media platforms
  • Planning and organising as well as good time-management skills
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
ACC Pan African Research College Postdoctoral Research Fellowship
Applicants may not previously have held full-time permanent professional or academic posts, must have completed a doctoral degree in an area of study relevant to the post (e.g. Geography, Sociology, Urban Planning, Urban Studies, and Development Studies) within the last five years, and should have an academic publication and presentation record commensurate with this stage in an academic career. Applicants should also demonstrate an awareness of actors, challenges and opportunities related to urban sustainability approaches and have an interest in interdisciplinary and broad engagement with diverse sectors to co-produce knowledge on urban issues. The successful incumbent will be required to comply with the University’s approved policies, procedures and practices for the postdoctoral sector. 
English Language Requirements: Good verbal and written communication skills.

ACC Pan African Research College Postdoctoral Research Fellowship
Applications must be submitted by midday on 6 August 2018 and consist of:
  • A letter of application stating areas of expertise, research interests and experience
  • The proposed focus of the research (maximum of two pages)
  • A CV including a list of publications
  • The names and contact details of at least two academics who have taught, supervised or worked alongside the applicant as referees
